What is Chiropractic ?
“Chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effect
of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There
is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustments”
(World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999).
The Chiropractors Act 1994 established the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) as
the regulatory body and since the 14th June 2001 it has been illegal for anyone
to practice as a chiropractor if they are not registered with the GCC. All chiropractors
at the Battlefield clinic are registered members of the General Chiropractic Council
and the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).
What Caused My Problem ?
The source of your problem is very important to a chiropractor as it may affect
your recovery and any possible future recurrence.
There are 3 major causes of mechanical disorders in the body:
- Poor Posture: It is important to maintain good posture, not only when you are standing,
but also while you are at work and while you sleep. Your chiropractor will perform
a postural exam; this will identify areas in your body predisposed to injury or
tension. Postural exercises can be advised, if necessary.
- Chronic Stress: Stress can be physical, psychological, emotional or chemical. Any
chronic form of stress has a detrimental effect on your health. Identifying and
removing (or at least reducing) any chronic stressors will significantly improve
your recovery and reduce the likelihood of any recurrence of your problem.
- Trauma: Trauma is the only causative factor not under your control; it normally
is the result of a fall or an accident. It can directly damage tissue, ranging from
sprained joints to fractured bones and depending on the amount of damage may predispose
you to arthritic changes in later life.
How Will I Be Treated ?
Chiropractic treatment is specifically designed for each patient. Treatment utilises
a wide variety of techniques including gentle manipulation, mobilisation, soft tissue
massage, dry acupuncture needling and various stretching techniques.
Clinical treatment is combined with stretches and strengthening exercises and practical
nutritional advice to further improve your health.
